Brugmansia sanguinea subsp. sanguinea
One can see flowers of Brugmansia sanguinea from Sintra's quintas hanging over the sinuous roads. This one was photographed at Monserrate in 2002. Quite astonishing, the distinguishable leaves and flowers high above seemed to come out of nowhere. It was difficult to determine which was the respective tree trunk. I recall that it leaned its slender trunk on others to ascend. The flowers were at least 4m above the ground. It was not located adjacent to the Chapel but further more in the same hillside. Apparently it was the only one. I wasn't able to find this tree once again. I suppose it was lost during dead and invasive trees cut downs that were made in that area. There is still one specimen at the old nursery's area. As an echo from the past sounds de Saint-Victor's impressions at Monserrate in 1891:

It's a 4 metre tree that produces an extraordinaire effect that one encounters in several different repetitions in this marvellous park.
